Orangutans are a species that is famous for its ability to escape from confinement

Many animals of different species who are held captive try to escape and regain their freedom. Some succeed. Orangutans are a species that is famous for its ability to escape from confinement. This photo shows an orangutan at the Ramat Gan zoo.

An orangutan in a U.S. zoo carefully planned his escape in advance. First, he traded with an orangutan in the cage next to him, exchanging biscuits for a piece of wire cut from an overhead light fixture. He hid the wire in his mouth, bending it around his gums to avoid detection by the zookeeper. When night fell and no keepers were in sight, he used the wire to pick the lock on his cage door and then on a door that led to the outside. Once he gained his own freedom, he picked the lock on the cage doors of all the other orangutans in his zoo enclosure, so they could all escape with him. When zookeepers arrived the next morning, they found all the enclosures empty and all the orangutans living in trees outside – in a habitat that was natural for them.

The zookeepers thought someone had accidentally left the doors unlocked and put the animals back in their cages, but the next night, the same thing happened. They set up video cameras to find out how the orangutans were escaping and watched with amazement how they secured their freedom.

Zookeepers are aware that the animals in captivity are intelligent, that they seek their freedom just as humans would in the same circumstance, and that a zoo cannot meet their needs as well as a life in the wild would. Yet they continue to hold animals against their will because zoos are a money-making venture. Does the choice to treat other living beings in this way contribute to a compassionate world?

العديد من الحيوانات من مختلف الأنواع التي احتجزت تحاول الهرب واستعادة حريتها. البعض منها ينجح. قردة السعلاة وهي أنواع مشهور بقدرتها على الهرب من الحجز. تظهر هذه   الصورة قرد السعلاة في حديقة حيوانات رمات غان.

قام أحد قرة السعلاة بالتخطيط بعناية لهربه في مسبقاً. أولا، قام بمساومة قرد سعلاة آخر في القفص إلى جانبه، وبادل معه البسكويت بقطعة من سلك مقطوع من مصباح معلق في السقف. وقام بإخفاء السلك في فمه، وبثنيه حول لثته لكي يتجنب أن يكتشفه حارس حديقة الحيوانات. عندما هبط الليل ولم يكن هناك أي حارس في مرمى النظر، قام باستخدام السلك من أجل فتح القفل الموجود على باب قفصه ومن ثم القفل الموجود على الباب الذي يؤدي إلى الخارج. عندما حصل على حريته، قام بفتح القفل الموجود على أبواب أقفاص قردة السعلاة الأخرى المجاورة له في حديقة الحيوانات، وبالتالي استطاعت جميعها الهرب معه. عندما وصل حارس الحديقة في الصباح التالي، وجد أن جميع الأقفاص فارغة، ووجد جميع قردة السعلاة تعيش على الأشجار في الخير، في موطن كان طبيعيا بالنسبة لهم.

اعتقد حراس حدقة الحيوانات ان شخص ما دون قصد ترك الأبواب غير مقفلة، وأعادوا قردة السعلاة إلى أقفاصها، ولكن في الليلة التالية حصل نفس الشيء. قام حراس الحديقة بتركيب كميرا فيديو من اجل معرفة كيف تقوم قردة السعلاة بالهرب وقد دهشوا عند شاهدوا كيف أمنت  حريتها.

يدرك حراس حديقة الحيوانات أن الحيوانات المحتجزة ذكية، لأنها تبحث عن حريتها تماماً كما يفعل البشر لو كانوا في نفس الظروف،  ولأن حديقة الحيوانات لا تبلي احتياجاتهم إضافة إلى الحياة البرية التي يرغبون بها. علاوة على أنهم ينقلون الحيوانات فوق إراداتها لأن حدائق الحيوانات مشروع مدر للمال. هل خيار التعامل مع الكائنات الحية الأخرى بهذه الطريقة تساهم في  الرأفة في العالم؟
