Koko, a gorilla, and All Ball, her kitten companion.  

Koko, who understands and uses sign language, asked her trainer for a cat. A litter of abandoned kittens was brought to Koko and she chose a gray male cat with no tail as a companion. She named the kitten All Ball. Koko was a wonderful caretaker and a gentle mother to the kitten. She treated him like a baby gorilla, carrying him on her back and trying to nurse him. When she was in a playful mood, she would try to dress All Ball in napkins or tell him in sign language that she wanted them to tickle each other. Tickling was her favorite game. One day, All Ball ran into the street and was hit by a car and killed. Koko was distraught over the death of All Ball and spoke of it soon after:
When asked "Do you want to talk about your kitty?“ Koko signed "Cry."When asked  "What happened to your kitty?“ Koko answered "Sleep cat."When she saw a picture of a cat who looked very much like All Ball, Koko pointed to the picture and signed "Cry, sad, frown.”

كوكو، التي تفهم وتستخدم لغة الإشارة طلبت من مدربها أن تحصل على قط. وأحضر لكوكو  عدد من قطط الحاويات الضالة واختارت قطاً رمادياً ذكراً بدون ذيل ليكون رفيقاً له. وقد أطلقت على القط اسم أول بول ”All Ball“. لقد كانت كوكو مربية رائعة وأماً لطيفة للقط.  لقد تعاملت معه كصغير غوريلا، وتحمله على ظهرها وتحاول أرضاعه. عندما كانت في مزاج مليء باللعب، كانت تحاول أن تلبس أول بول ”All Ball“ منديلاً، أو تخبره بلغة الإشارة أنها تريد أن يدغدغ كل منهما الآخر. كانت الدغدغة لعبتها المفضلة.

في يوم ما، ركض أول بول ”All Ball“ إلى الشارع وضربته سيارة وقتل. لقد كانت كوكو شديدة الاضطراب لموت أول بول ”All Ball“ وعند الحديث معها بعد الحادثة بوقت قريب:

عندما سألت: ” هل ترغبين بالحديث عن هرك؟“  قامت كوكو بإشارة ”البكاء.“.

عندما سالت: ”ماذا حدث لهرك“ أجابت كوكو ”هر نائم“

عندما شاهدت صورة لهر يشبه إلى حد كبير أول بول ”All Ball“، قامت كوكو بالإشارة إلى الصورة وقامت بإشارة ”البكاء، والحزن، والعبوس.“
