A humpback whale entangled in lines from heavy crab traps

A humpback whale was entangled in lines from heavy crab traps that were weighing her down so much, she was in danger of drowning. Volunteer divers who learned of her difficulty jumped in the water to cut the lines holding her down, even though she could have badly hurt them with one flick of her tail. She seemed to understand that they were trying to help her and although her eyes followed their every move, she remained still and let them work.

 When the divers finally freed her, at last, she gave a great leap of joy into the air. Then she swam up to face each of the divers in turn and they reported feeling a wave of immense gratitude coming from her. They said it was the most amazing experience of their lives.

Afterwards, she played with them by gently splashing water on them and pushing them around before finally swimming away.

An orca held captive in a laboratory was able to look into the office of the scientist studying him through a glass window. When the scientist held a book containing photos of animals up to the window, the orca would swim past and pay no attention to the photos. If the scientist held up a photo of another member of his own species, however, the captive orca would stop at the window and stare at the photo. Pigeons can also recognize different subjects in photos, like trees or people, and understand the concept of grouping the subjects into different categories.

علق حوت سنامي بشباك سرطان البحر الثقيلة والتي كانت تجره بثقلها إلى العمق بشكل كبير، وقد كانت تواجه خطر الغرق. قفز غواصون متطوعين رغم معرفتهم بصعوبتها إلى الماء لقطع خيوط التي تجرها إلى الأسفل، وعلى الرغم من أنهم قد يصابون بالضرر بضربة واحدة من ذيلها. لكن يظهر أنها كانت تدرك أنهم كانوا يحاولون مسعدتها على الرغم أن أعينها كانت تراقبهم في كل حركة، ولكنها بقيت ساكنة وجعلتهم يقومون بالعمل.

عندما قام الغواصون في نهاية المطاف بإطلاق سراحها، في النهاية قامت بقفزة كبيرة في الهواء تعبيرا عن فرحتها. ثم سبحت إلى الأعلى لتقابل كل غواص بالدور، وقالوا أنهم شعر بموجة من الشكر والامتنان تصدر منها. وقالوا أنها كانت أغرب تجربة في حياتهم.

بعدئذ، قامت باللعب معهم من خلال رش الماء عليه ودفعهم من الخلف قبل أن تقوم بالسباحة مبتعدة في النهاية.

كانت أحد الحيتان القاتلة المحتجزة في مختبر قادرا على النظر إلى داخل مكتب العالم الذي يدرسه من خلال نافذة زجاجية.  عندما حمل العالم كتابا يحتوي على صور للحيوانات بالقرب من النافذة، كان الحوت القاتل يسبح بعيدا دون أن يولي انتباها للصور.  إذا حمل العالم كتابا يحتوي على صور لفرد آخر من نوعه، بطبيعة الحال، فإن الحوت القاتل سوف يتوقف عند النافذة ويحدق في الصور. طيور الحمام يمكنها أيضاً ان تميز الأشياء المختلفة في الصور، مثل الأشجار والأشخاص، وإدراك مفهوم تجميع الأشياء في أصناف مختلفة.
