Koko Mourning the loss of her friend, Michael. Gorillas experience sadness and grief, just like humans.

When Michael was just a baby in his mother’s arms, poachers killed his mother so they could take him away from his home and natural habitat and sell him. At the age of 3, he was brought to live with Koko at a university where researchers were studying gorillas. Michael learned sign language from Koko and from his trainers. As he described the brutal killing of his mother to them, through sign language, he cried.

Michael was able to talk about emotion, memories, and lies using sign language. Both Michael and Koko used the sign "fake" to describe a lie or to express doubt about the truth of a statement.

Michael died of heart failure. Many gorillas died of heart failure in American zoos. Scientists think it is because zoos do not know what foods gorillas eat in their natural environment and therefore, do not know how to meet their nutritional needs and keep them healthy.

Koko and another gorilla named Ndume, who were both friends of Michael, mourned Michael’s death for months. They did not play or eat with their usual energy and enthusiasm. Koko walked to the place where Michael slept, signed Michael’s name and the word “cry” and curled up in his blanket. Ndume went to a large rubber tire that Michael liked to swing on and sat on it for a long time, looking very sad.

عندما كان مايكل مجرد صغير على ذراعي أمه،  قتل الصيادون أمه ومن ثم أخذوه بعيدا عن بيته وموطنه الطبيعي وقاموا ببيعه. في سن الثالثة، تم إحضاره للعيش مع كوكو في جامعة حيث كان الباحثون يدرسون الغوريلا. تعلم مايكل لغة الإشارة من كوكو ومن مدربيه. كما أنه وصف قتل أمه الوحشي لهم من خلال لغة الإشارة وبكى.

كان مايكل قادرا على الحديث عن العواطف والذكريات والكذب باستخدام لغة الإشارة. استخدم كل من كوكو ومايكل إشارة ”كاذب“ لوصف الكذب أو للتعبير عن الشك في حقيقة الكلام.

مات مايكل بنوبة قلبية. ماتت العديد من حيوانات الغوريلا بنوبة قلبية في حدائق الحيوانات الأمريكية. يعتقد العلماء أن ذلك يحدث بسبب أن حدائق الحيوانات لا تعرف ما هو الطعام التي تأكلها حيوانات الغوريلا في بيتها الطبيعية، ونتيجة لذلك فهم لا يعرفون كيف يلبون لها التغذية المطلوبة والحفاظ عليها بحالة صحية جيدة.

كانت كوكو وغوريلا أخرى تدعى ندومي  اللتان كانتا صديقتين لمايكل مفجوعتان لموت مايكل لشهور. لم تكونا تلعبان أو تأكلان بطاقتهما الطبيعية والحماسة. قامت كوكو بالسير إلى المكان الذي كان ينام فيه مايكل، وأشارت إلى اسم مايكل وكلمة ”بكاء“ ثم جلست  على سجادته. ندومي ذهبت إلى إطار مطاطي كبير كان يحب مايكل التأرجح والجلوس عليه لفترة طويلة، وكانت تبدو حزينة جداً.
